Time is ticking and I’m getting a little panicky as the reality of doing my first Tough Mudder sinks in. Having said that, it’s not as intimidating as I thought it would be originally thanks to the training I’ve put in over the last couple of months. My approach to exercise used to be that I would just skip the gym if I was too busy, but it turns out a 19km course full of obstacles is a powerful motivator.
Weights and monkey bars have been good preparation for all the upper-body challenges Tough Mudder has, but I’ve developed proper calluses as a result. My hands are more like a builder’s than a popstar’s now, but if it helps me on the day it’s worth it.
In my first blog I mentioned that running was one of my main weaknesses but since then I’ve run longer distances and getting faster. I’ve been tracking my progress using the Lifelog app on my SmartBand Talk and it’s great to see how much I’ve been improving. I look at my running time and the calories I’ve burned and use those numbers to push myself. It’s much easier to tell myself to do one more rep or one more km when I have it on because the results are there to see.
A couple of years ago I went to Barry’s Boot Camp and it was so tough I felt like I was going to throw up. Recently, I went to another one and although it was still difficult, I felt really good. Annoyingly, I forgot to bring my SmartBand Talk with me so I couldn’t see how many calories I burned, but next time I’ll make sure it’s on. I think I’m becoming a bit of a stats junkie!
Overall, I’ve made so much progress with my fitness since joining #TeamSony. I can’t say for sure if I’ll be able to cross the finish line on the day but I’m going to give it my all. As long as my callused hands get me to the end of the monkey bars, I’ll be happy!
