inov-8 athlete Jonathan Albon is the world’s number-one obstacle racer after beating out the competition at the Spartan Race World Championship. Jonathan became victorious after battling it out over 12 brutal miles of hills, mud and water, rope climbs, barbed wire crawls and fire pits with some of the fittest athletes on the planet.

Jonathan has won countless obstacle course events as well as fell, mountain trail and ultra running races but this was his first attempt at the Spartan Race World Championship – it’s the sport’s biggest day of the year. He crossed the finish line in Vermont in a time of 3hrs 23mins and 15secs, covered in mud and bruises but far ahead of runner-up Ryan Atkins from Canada and third place fellow inov-8 athlete Cody Moat, who is from the US.

Jonathan said he was really happy with how the race went and that ‘it was an honour to compete alongside’ the best in the sport – it was no mean feat though and he had to push himself ‘to the limit’ to get across the finish line first.

Obstacle racing has become widely popular in the UK in recent years and there are now hundreds of races to compete at. Carl Wibberley, editor of UK magazine Obstacle Race, was thrilled for Jonathan and commented that, ‘we have so much talent in the UK and now we are starting to see it shine on the international stage against athletes from obstacle race powerhouse countries who have previously dominated the sport.’
