The Grim Challenge
Aldershot, Hampshire
3rd-4th December

It might only be 12km long, but the unforgiving terrain of this cross-country race held over the Army’s vehicle testing tracks makes sure it lives up to the ominous name. The hilly course requires entrants to traverse rocky paths, wade through a knee-high ravine and crawl through thick mud. Expect to be cold, wet, dirty and mightily relieved when you stagger over the finish line.

Wight Winter Sportive
Yarmouth, Isle of Wight
4th December

One of the few big races in the winter cycling calendar, the Wight Winter Sportive is the next in the popular Wiggle Super Series. This road-based race has two routes (110km and 70km), both of which take in the most picturesque scenery the Isle of Wight has to offer. Hill climbs are rewarded with spectacular sea views, and two festive food stations dispense mince pies to boost dwindling energy levels.

Tough Guy
Perton, near Wolverhampton
29th January

For the most extreme event in the British race calendar look no further than Tough Guy. Freezing water, huge wooden obstacles, fields of flames, electric prods, steep inclines and water tunnels are just a few of the evil features of the course. If that’s not enough, you can even sign up to the Jesus Warrior Squad for the pleasure of lugging a 30kg crucifix round with you.

Adidas Silverstone Half Marathon
Silverstone, Northamptonshire
11th March

The historic Silverstone motor racing circuit provides an interesting location for this half marathon, giving entrants the chance to run on the world-famous track. It’s also perfectly timed for anyone training for the Virgin London Marathon in April. All abilities are welcome and the emphasis is on raising money for charity rather than chasing personal bests, though there’s no reason you can’t do both.
