Mid-January is an especially bleak time of the year. The joy of Christmas is long in the past and your motivation regarding any New Year’s resolutions is fading fast. And it’s cold.

It is not surprising to learn, therefore, that the 16th January has earned the moniker of Blue Monday, the most depressing day of the year and also the point where most people are likely to have given up on their new healthy habits.

Fitness First researched the most popular reasons for people quitting their resolutions so early and have ranked the eight most common excuses:

  • A lack of time
  • Boredom
  • Lack of enjoyment
  • Can’t stick to a regime
  • Takes too long to see the results
  • The novelty wears off
  • Putting off until summer comes
  • Focusing on a specific goal is too challenging

Nothing too unexpected, although kudos to the people who get two weeks into January and decide to bin all attempts to exercise until the summer.

To combat this, Fitness First have established an annual tradition on this day where they open up their gyms to all on what they term Red Monday.

This means anyone and everyone can turn up and try out a fitness class, whether they’re a member or not, in the hope that it will rekindle their motivation regarding any exercise-based resolutions.
