1) Philips GoGEAR

Practicality is the watchword for the Philips GoGEAR. At 24g you can easily take it anywhere, while its quick charge function allows 90 minutes of playback from just five minutes of charging – perfect if you’re in a hurry but drained the battery on your last outing. The 4GB player’s file system is a touch fiddly compared to the likes of the iPod Nano, and trying to find a song mid-jog can be a little frustrating.

2) SanDisk Sansa Clip+

This sturdy little media player owes its name to the useful belt clip on the back of the device, which is ideal if your gym shorts don’t have any pockets. With 8GB of storage and a radio function, this is certainly the best-value MP3 player of our selection, though a feeble maximum volume mean it is lagging behind some devices in the most crucial area.

3) Creative Zen Style M300

Using the Bluetooth headphones this player comes with means you don't get tangled in your headphone cables. Aside from its wireless connectivity, the Zen Style has a microSD card slot that allows you to bump up the 4GB capacity by an extra 32GB. The touch screen and menu systems make for easy browsing, and the 20-hour battery life will last for a load of gym sessions before you need to rechardge it. It also features an FM radio, should you run out of your own tunes.
