Wahoo has announced the acquisition of the virtual training app RGT cycling, which will be rebranded as Wahoo RGT and bundled with Wahoo’s SYSTM training app under one subscription, Wahoo X

You may better know Wahoo as the manufacturer of some of the best turbo trainers, best exercise bikes, best heart rate monitors, best bike computers… you get the idea.

The move means that Wahoo can offer its subscribers both platforms in what will make an attractive alternative to virtual training giant Zwift. The Wahoo X subscription costs $14.99 a month (around £12) or $129 a year (around £102). Zwift costs $14.99 or £12.99 a month.

Wahoo RGT users are able to ride on realistic-looking virtual roads, with routes like the Mont Ventoux climb and the World Championship course in Leuven, as well as uploading their own routes to be created via the Magic Roads feature.

The Magic Roads feature means you can practice the route of your next race, or upload your favourite training ride so you can tackle it indoors when the weather outside is inclement. The app also offers social rides and races.

Realism is a distinguishing feature of Wahoo RGT compared with Zwift, which offers a more “gamified” experience in its colourful virtual worlds. Wahoo RGT focuses on producing a realistic experience, in both the roads you ride on and the physics of cycling – so you don’t fly around hairpin turns without having to slow down and you have to ride around other cyclists to overtake, rather than passing straight through them.

Wahoo’s existing SYSTM app offers a more holistic approach to your cycling and multisport training, backing up personalised cycling workouts with yoga, strength sessions and mental training (the latter a 10-week program covering elite strategies like positive self-talk). The SYSTM app also includes The Sufferfest training platform, which Wahoo acquired in 2019.

Current Wahoo SYSTEM or RGT Cycling users will be moved to a Wahoo X subscription with no extra charge. The Wahoo SYSTM and Wahoo RGT apps are available for iOS, Android, macOS and Windows. Those keen to test out the platform can try it through a 14-day free trial, and you can learn more about the Wahoo X subscription on the Wahoo website.
