While the absence of real-world events has left runners without the community spirit and atmosphere that only a mass participation event can provide, there have still been plenty of virtual events to get involved with during the COVID-19 lockdown. Another biggie is coming up this week on Wednesday 3rd June – Global Running Day.
This annual event asks runners to, unsurprisingly, go out for a run, but there’s a twist to it this year. If going out isn’t an option, then you can exercise at home instead to join in the festivities.
The Run 1 Tag 1 challenge is the main event for Global Running Day 2020, and it involves getting out and running one mile (or exercising at home) in honour of someone that inspires you, and then tagging someone else on social media to go and do the same, along with the hashtags #Run1Tag1 and #GlobalRunningDay.
You can pledge to do this – or to run any distance you like – on the Global Running Day website, and sign up to do it as a team as well. There’s also a Strava challenge for the event, in partnership with the New York Road Runners, which is already up and running. If you want to get involved you don’t have to run your mile on 3rd June – you can log it any time before 7th June.
Speaking of Strava challenges, if you fancy running something a little longer this Wednesday there is also the Lululemon Global Running Day 5K. You do have to log this run on Global Running Day itself, and if you do you’ll earn a digital badge for your Strava collection.
If those events don’t float your boat, then rest assured you can get involved in Global Running Day simply by going out for a run.
