Charlie Allenby is a London-based journalist with more than a decade of experience writing across various topics for The Guardian, The Independent, Time Out London, Men’s Fitness UK and Cycling Weekly, among others. For Coach, he contributes features and buying advice about cycling, and is Coach’s dedicated turbo trainer reviewer. He is also Coach’s chief whey and casein protein powder tester, trying as many brands as possible.

Charlie graduated with an MA in Magazine Journalism from City University and began his career in contract publishing, working on magazines and websites for brands such as Vitality and Waitrose. Since 2018, he combined his passion for pedalling with his career, first as a staff writer for Road Cycling UK, and now as a contributor to the likes of BikeRadar, T3.com and Rouleur.

He has covered everything from interviews with multiple Tour de France winners to round-ups of the latest commuting gear, and his first book, Bike London: A Guide To Cycling In The City, was published in 2021. He’s also never one to shy away from putting his own abilities on the line in the name of journalism, whether that’s entering a training platform’s search for cycling’s next big star or reviewing a 100-mile sportive.

Not content with sticking to one form of cardio exercise, he’s a keen runner and has a marathon PB of 3hr 7min. He has signed up for the 2023 Manchester Marathon and has a sub-3hr time in his sights, while a long-distance triathlon is on his bucket list.
